Today I’m starting a new series called ¨Career Break Or…¨ It’s a tongue-in-cheek comparison between your life at work and an experience you could be having traveling around the world. Hopefully it will make you smile, laugh, maybe even make you a little envious of those who have taken the leap so you get motivated to move your own plans forward. Enjoy!
Performance Review OR Afternoon Coffee in a Buenos Aires’ Street Cafe
Who doesn’t love a good performance review? Quality time with your boss, you showing off how much value you add to the organization all ending in a big fat raise, a promotion and more resources to do your job. Good times! Of course, you could be spending that time hanging out in Buenos Aires soaking in the cafe culture. No, no, no. Silly me. Going through a performance review is way better. Don’t read any further. Really. Stop. Now.
Performance Review | Afternoon Coffee in street cafe in Buenos Aires | |
Occasion | Hour-long discussion with your boss, ending (hopefully) with a raise | No reason in particular. Just a good excuse to enjoy the cafe culture and trade travel stories |
The site | Your boss’s office | So many choices. I recommend El Ateneo |
Allows You to Take a Break From | That report your boss is expecting by the end of the day | A day of walking around the city |
Ambient sound | The HVAC turning on and off | Tango music playing overhead and customers whispering as they talk about their great book find |
The conversation | ¨Objectively¨ discuss what you did well, what you didn’t and your ¨opportunities¨ for growth | Where you went, where you want to go and discussing the finer points of the sites you just saw |
The reference material | The official HR ¨Performance Appraisal¨ report which will go into your permanent HR file | Maps, guidebooks and the coffee and dessert menu |
What’s the worst thing that could happen | It’s not getting fired. It’s finding out that all that hard work wasn’t appreciated by your boss and the company | Coffee shop is out of the dessert you wanted |
How you recover | Put up a strong defense to your boss resulting in a minimal change to the performance review | Wait to have dessert with dinner |
How you feel afterward | Cheated…like you should be getting a bigger raise | Ready for a disco nap so you can explore Buenos Aires’ nightlife |

I love the idea for this series, except it makes me MAD because it really does make me want to just walk away and travel like you lucky folks…
Can’t wait to read the next installment.
lol. You can do it Gene! Lots of us out there to help out. Thanks for the comments. More goodness coming.
Awes
Sorry…. haha what I was trying to say was
Awesome way of comparison, it will either make a lot of people quit their jobs immediately or at least make them extremely envious
I love this! Funny. You nailed the “what’s the worst that could happen” section.
This cracks me up. I still have to get one more bonus before I leave, but this makes me happy that there’s only one more performance review left!
Hahaha!
Well, I’m proud to say that I got my first career break
Leaving next month…. a coffee in Buenos Aires, anyone? 😀
Thanks for all the comments! @Chris, if anyone will make it happen, it will be you. @Daniele, congrats and seriously go hang out at El Ateneo. Everyone in BA will know where it is. But, go to the original first, not the new one.
Love it! I actually quit on my last performance review! That was the beginning of my career break in 2006!
