Horses and Moai on Easter Island

I so loved Easter Island. In a country like Chile with major contrasts, Rapa Nui (its traditional name), offers something completely different. Given it’s polynesian roots, those who have been to Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti or elsewhere in the Polynesian triangle will feel a certain familiarity upon arrival. I bought a last minute 4 day/3 night package in Santiago for under $500 (flight, hotel, 3 tours and breakfast included). Given Easter Island’s notoriety for being an expensive destination, I jumped on that deal.  The next time I go, I will spend extra time to hike and bike around the island. The tours are great for seeing the major sites and hearing about the history. In fact, this Suh-Weet Shot came from our tour of the volcano where the moai (aka the big headed statues) were carved. But, I also wish I had more time to explore alone. So, the next time, I will be sure to build that in to my itinerary. One quick tip, outside the hotel, the island operates mostly via a cash-based economy. Take extra pesos as there is only one ATM on the island.
