All around the Vancouver Boat Harbor,  are several flower beds with all sorts of colorful varieties. I was there jsut as fall was hitting and many, like these sunflowers, were on their last leg. Even though they were slowly wilting away, I couldn’t help but see a bit of beauty hanging on. And, now that winter has its firm grip on the northern hemisphere, I thought we could all use a touch of natural color. Enjoy these week’s Suh-Weet shot from Canada, and remember, it’s only a few more months until a fresh crop of sunflowers will come into bloom.

The National Art Museum of Catalonia (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) is one of the great museums of Barcelona which is saying a lot (dare I say this is in Spain?). The city is teeming with any number of iconic museums and great artists: Miró, Dali, Picasso, not to mention Gaudí who left an ongoing legacy sprinkled throughout. The Romanesque and Gothic influence is unmistakeable everywhere you look. So, don’t forget to look up from time to time. Unfortunately, I do not remember which part of the museum I was in when I took this shot. but, it was beautiful and I had to make it today’s Suh-Weet Shot.

In general, I’m not a fan of Panama City, Panama. But, that’s not to say that there aren’t pockets of charm that you should visit. The old city is such a place. Reminiscent of Cartagena, it will take you back in time. Unlike Cartagena, the old town of Panama City feels like a ghost town. While many of the buildings have a veneer of upkeep, there’s a sadness in the quiet dignity of these buildings. As Panama City invests in yet another never-to-be-lived in high rise, the old city site patiently waiting to be rediscovered, not by the tourists, but by the Panamanians. One of my favorite places in the world is the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. Part of it is nostalgia. When I was an exchange student in South Africa, one of my host dad’s was from the region. So, I got to spend a bit of time there. There’s not much there. It’s a town with a windswept beach that shuts down after dark. But there’s something about looking south and knowing that there’s no more land between you and Antarctica that keeps taking me back. On the shore is the old lighthouse. It’s still in operation as the coastline in this part of the world can be quite dangerous. You can go up and take in the 360-degree view of the coast, the neighboring towns and a bit of scrub-brush veld, which is the site of the world’s smallest plant kingdom – the Cape Floral Kingdom. I took this photo on my last trip to South Africa and it’s today’s Suh-Weet Shot.

Last week I showed off a boat tour in Bariloche that you can take to explore the lakes  in the area.  One of the stops on the trip shows off this innocuous cabin in the woods. Does it look familiar? It might. Apparently Walt Disney traveled to Bariloche. Upon seeing this cabin, the locals claim that he was inspired to write Bambi. I’m not sure if it’s true or not. But, it makes for a great local legend and gives you something memorable to tell your friends when you get home. Whether or not we can thank the Argentines for inspiring Bambi is unclear. But, I can thank them for inspiring today’s Suh-Weet shot.

Bariloche is a favorite spot in Argentina whether it’s in the summer or winter. Blessed with mountains and lakes, it’s an adventure lovers paradise. I spent a month here during my break skiing, one of my goals during my career break. On one of my days off, I took a long boat trip on the lakes around Bariloche. It was a cold, clear day. But, it was beautiful. During our trip I managed to capture this Suh-Weet Shot of our boat returning to pick us up. After spending several active days in Bariloche, you will need a day of relative rest. Be sure to take a boat tour ont he lakes to see another side of the area.

Quito may be best known for lying on the equator. But, there’s an even more important data point for you to know – it’s altitude. At 9350 feet / 1800 meters above sea level, you will feel how thin the air is. And, as high as that is, you can get even higher. The Pinchincha volcano tops out at a staggering 15,696 ft / 4,784 meters. To help you ascend those heights is the local teleferico (gondola). High above this high city you are treated to a magnificent view below. Be sure to bundle up as the wind may be fierce and it will chill you. Luckily there is a cafe where you can enjoy a nice hot beverage and take in the scene below. This photo from atop Pichincha is this week’s Suh-Weet Shot.

Monserrate is one of the most iconic tourist sites in Bogotá. The mountaintop sits high atop the already sky-high city that can impact anyone altitude challenged. Bogotá sits at 2600 meters/8530 feet above sea level, while Monserrate sits at 3150 meters/10,300 feet. Once you ride up on the gondola or funincular, you’re treated to the views of a sprawling metropolis on one side of the mountain and lush green, virtually untouched moutnainscapes on the other. Hidden amongst the many little corners on top are a number of stone memorials. Monserrate is home to one of the oldest churches in Bogotá and it holds special religious significance for the city’s Catholics. I took this shot on one of many trips up the mountain and it is today’s Suh-Weet Shot and when you travel to Colombia, make time for a little side trip.

Sailing down the protected waters of the southern Chilean coast in Patagonia is about a sublime experience as you can get in travel. You can see parts of the world practically inaccessible to humans. The Navimag company provides the service whose main role is to shuttle cargo between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales and a couple of places in between. Snow capped volcanos, glaciers green coastlines, and water in several shades of blue all await. This beauty is why I had to include it in Season One of The Career Break Travel Show. And this photo is one of many that I could have included in this week’s Suh-Weet Shot.
