Last week I showed off a boat tour in Bariloche that you can take to explore the lakes  in the area.  One of the stops on the trip shows off this innocuous cabin in the woods. Does it look familiar? It might. Apparently Walt Disney traveled to Bariloche. Upon seeing this cabin, the locals claim that he was inspired to write Bambi. I’m not sure if it’s true or not. But, it makes for a great local legend and gives you something memorable to tell your friends when you get home. Whether or not we can thank the Argentines for inspiring Bambi is unclear. But, I can thank them for inspiring today’s Suh-Weet shot.

Bariloche is a favorite spot in Argentina whether it’s in the summer or winter. Blessed with mountains and lakes, it’s an adventure lovers paradise. I spent a month here during my break skiing, one of my goals during my career break. On one of my days off, I took a long boat trip on the lakes around Bariloche. It was a cold, clear day. But, it was beautiful. During our trip I managed to capture this Suh-Weet Shot of our boat returning to pick us up. After spending several active days in Bariloche, you will need a day of relative rest. Be sure to take a boat tour ont he lakes to see another side of the area.

Quito may be best known for lying on the equator. But, there’s an even more important data point for you to know – it’s altitude. At 9350 feet / 1800 meters above sea level, you will feel how thin the air is. And, as high as that is, you can get even higher. The Pinchincha volcano tops out at a staggering 15,696 ft / 4,784 meters. To help you ascend those heights is the local teleferico (gondola). High above this high city you are treated to a magnificent view below. Be sure to bundle up as the wind may be fierce and it will chill you. Luckily there is a cafe where you can enjoy a nice hot beverage and take in the scene below. This photo from atop Pichincha is this week’s Suh-Weet Shot.

Monserrate is one of the most iconic tourist sites in Bogotá. The mountaintop sits high atop the already sky-high city that can impact anyone altitude challenged. Bogotá sits at 2600 meters/8530 feet above sea level, while Monserrate sits at 3150 meters/10,300 feet. Once you ride up on the gondola or funincular, you’re treated to the views of a sprawling metropolis on one side of the mountain and lush green, virtually untouched moutnainscapes on the other. Hidden amongst the many little corners on top are a number of stone memorials. Monserrate is home to one of the oldest churches in Bogotá and it holds special religious significance for the city’s Catholics. I took this shot on one of many trips up the mountain and it is today’s Suh-Weet Shot and when you travel to Colombia, make time for a little side trip.

Sailing down the protected waters of the southern Chilean coast in Patagonia is about a sublime experience as you can get in travel. You can see parts of the world practically inaccessible to humans. The Navimag company provides the service whose main role is to shuttle cargo between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales and a couple of places in between. Snow capped volcanos, glaciers green coastlines, and water in several shades of blue all await. This beauty is why I had to include it in Season One of The Career Break Travel Show. And this photo is one of many that I could have included in this week’s Suh-Weet Shot.

If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you know that I love Patagonia and I love the Navimag ferry. Once you dock you have time to mill around on the deck and take in the scenery. Just off the shore of Puerto Montt (the city where you board the ferry) is a small island inhabited by farmers, cattle and boats. It’s unclear if these boats are just docked but are still sea worthy or if they are castoffs, destined to be marooned on these shores forever. Of the many pictures I have from the deck before the ferry left the harbor, I loved this one of the farmers tending to their cattle and have made it today’s Suh-Weet Shot.

There’s no denying that Brazil is hot right now. A strong, growing economy, the upcoming FIFA World Cup the food, the people, the accent…what’s not to love? While in Rio I spent a few hours at the Botanical Gardens. It’s a great setting with a mix of manicured, well-protected orchids to these sorts of overgrown settings that you see in this week’s Suh-Weet Shot. While there’s a lot of things to compete for your attention in Rio, don’t miss the chance to get away from the craziness of the rest of the city and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Botanical Gardens.

One of my goals on my career break was to learn how to ski. Given that I was going to spend a lot of time in Argentina, I headed to Bariloche to ski for about three weeks. I signed up for week-long lessons and then I was on my own. Almost every day for 3 weeks, this welcomed me in the morning when I arrived and waited for me when I came down from the mountain. Inside the building with the bright green roofs on the left was a coffee shop where I enjoyed a hot beverage and read the paper after my runs. One day while out walking around the ski village, I got this Suh-Weet shot.

Machu Picchu in Peru opens early. For those like me not hiking the Inca Trail an early morning bus at 5AM takes you up the steep mountain to the entrance. The ticket line seems long but it moved quickly. Entering the grounds was aided by the path, a necessary aide given the thick cover of fog that still hung in the air. When I first walked past this tiny stone house I thought I was walking into the heart of the old city. As the sun rose illuminating the fog in an eerie white glow, I began to realize that was not the case. I found a comfortable place to sit and watch nature’s morning show. As the sun rose, the fog slowly burned away gently allowing Machu Picchu to reveal itself to me. While I don’t have the proper equipment to truly capture this pre-dawn soupy ambience, I miraculously was able to get this Suh-Weet shot before all the fog was gone.

So, I recently found out that Eva Peron and I share a birthday. And oddly, the day of her death falls on my mom’s birthday. As an icon in Argentina who is still remembered and revered, I wanted to put this Suh-Weet Shot up of her mausoleum entrance around a significant date in her life. Well, I couldn’t very well put it up on mom’s birthday now could I? Born on May 7, she became a global icon whose image was shaped and solidified (for better or worse) by Andrew Lloyd Webber. When you visit Buenos Aires, the Recoleta Cemetery is typically part of the tourist’s route. Just follow the crowds and you’ll wind up at her resting place. If you really want to learn more about her, take a cab or a longer leisurely stroll to the Evita Museum from Recoleta (I’ve walked it. It is possible). There’s a good deal about her early life, time as the first lady of Argentina as well as information about the whole sordid affair of her body being stolen and missing for years. Tonight I won’t cry for you Eva, but I just might raise a glass of Malbec to you.
